The London Book Fair is one of the largest events in the publishing industry, attracting a global audience of more than a quarter of a million visitors each year.
In just a few weeks, from 10th to 12th April, publishers from all over the world will meet at the Olympia Conference Centre to grow their professional network, discuss business deals and trade rights and learn about the global trends and developments affecting the industry. This year’s program includes conferences on issues from artificial intelligence and blockchain technology to Open Access, audiobooks, marketing, brand licensing and commissioning.
Here are a few of the conferences and seminars we are most excited about:
9 Apr 2018, Olympia Conference Centre
The day before the official start of the fair, this conference will give the opportunity to keep abreast of what’s happening in the global industry. Themes will include publishing trends and tactics, new audiences and business models. Among the speakers are Tom Goodwin, Head of Innovation at Zenith Media USA, and David Shelley, CEO of Hachette.

Over the last decade, the publishing industry has experienced an extraordinary degree of change, and central to this has been the move from print to digital. This shift has forced publishers to adopt new approaches and find new ways of streamlining production processes. Darren Ryan, CEO of Deanta, will share his top insights as to how publishers can ‘slash’ their production schedules.

This event will focus on the major issues shaping the future of academic publishing, including the impact of Open Access and the future of peer review processes. Conference chairs will be Niamh O’Connor, Publishing Director of the Biochemical Society, and Anthony Cond, Managing Director of Liverpool University Press. Speakers include Michiel Kolman, Senior VP Information Industry Relations and Academic Ambassador Emeritus at Elsevier, and Tracey Armstrong, CEO at the Copyright Clearance Centre.

This panel includes Matthew Day, Head of Open and Data Publishing at Cambridge University Press; Sven Fund, Managing Director at Knowledge Unlatched; Danny Kingsley, Deputy Director, Scholarly Communication and Research Services at Cambridge University Library; and Chris Leonard, Head of Product and Development at Emerald Group Publishing. They will assess the state of OA today, discuss the evolving relationship between publishers and institutional libraries and lay out a vision for the future.

Tahir Mansoori, founder of wizdom.ai, will explain how AI works, illustrate its interplay with blockchain and show how AI technology can have a positive impact on the progress of human civilisation.

The Nielsen Book team will present their annual Books & Consumers survey and share some insights on consumer book buying behaviours. Practical aspects like metadata, tagging and setting up an ISBN will also be covered.

Audiobooks are the fastest growing sector in the digital publishing industry. This seminar will look at who these new listeners are, at the types of books that work well in this format and at the audiobook production, quality control, discovery and distribution process. Among the speakers are Joanna Lord, Audio and Online Sales Manager at Canongate, and Dominic White, Head of Publishing and Commerce at WF Howes.
